Exactly, I was on those teams and we could play with PV for 2-2.5 maybe 3 quarters. and then it was over they could do whatever they wanted because they would just wear us down by having numbers, and not just numbers but numbers that could play and contribute. In 4 games '89-90 (regular season and playoffs) we were up at the half in all of them by one to two touchdowns and lost them all by 3-4 touchdowns in the second half. From '89-91 we beat Appy all 3 years and finished 2nd in district behind PV in '89-90 and won the district in '91, Appy won state in '89, lost in region game in '90 and went to half state in '91.

I have both of those games on film and you're right, Coeburn played decent against Powell Valley in those games although they didn't come close to winning score-wise. The Coeburn teams then were far beyond what we have today, as was the entire LPD itself obviously. Then you have the Coeburn team in '91 actually defeating Powell Valley (a rebuilding year for them, granted), and so forth. One score that really catches my interest is that of Powell Valley--Coeburn in 1995. You have to remember this is the '95 team with Thomas Jones as a senior, so Powell Valley was a juggernaut then. The final score? 30-22, Powell Valley. Only an 8 point difference! That was the closest game score-wise Powell Valley played that entire year, including the playoffs (in which they defeated Coeburn by a more substantial amount).

I really wish I had the game film for that '95 game, and I'll have to order it sometime in the near future. Does anyone remember anything about that game, and why the score was so daggone close? In the playoffs, Powell Valley replayed Coeburn and won then 49-18, a far cry from the first game. Did something happen to Coeburn between then and the playoffs (i.e. injuries), or did Powell Valley just have a poor showing during the regular season game? I'd really like to know more about that.

I know its been 20 years since those 89 and 90 PV teams. I believe they 2 platooned it as well. I played aginst those teams and I can't remember any players playing both ways. If they did it was 1 or 2 that did.

I REMEMBER*** me being 6-7 years old at the time, watching mike hamm run the ball, that dude was a freaking monster.

I played for PV from 88-90 and the only time I ever remember being behind Coeburn at the half was in the 90 Regionals..and that was 12-6..and that game went out 40-12 or something along those lines. Robbins and Richards had some bad blood back then stemming from the disqualification of a 4x100 girls track relay team based on something one had on after PV had won the event in Regionals. Phil told Carl he'd put 56 on 'em in the fall..and when we played Coeburn 56 points was the goal and the foot didn't come off the gas til that was reached..if it wasn't reached, the Knights just got 4 quarters of the starters...and they never got any closer than within 21 points of us at the end of any of those games..and that was the 28-7 final in the 90 regular season.

This may not have anything to do with anything since it appears blueknightmom has lost interest in this thread already, but one thing that stuck out to me in nearly all her posts were that the kids were tired, exhausted, needed a break. Guess what? It's football. There's a thing called conditioning. That's what you practice for so in the fourth quarter you're not sucking air. Maybe if the guys weren't so tired at the end they could do a little better? Just a thought....

Carl and Phil always had a thing for one another, I think it actually went even further back than that track meet from Phil's time at Christiansburg and Carl's time at Salem. In '95 the only real chance you had was to keep the PV offense off the field by making long sustained drives 3-4 yards at a time and short passes, that's what they did the best I recall.

Stidham played fullback and linebacker. Webb rotated at WR and played safety. Those are about the only ones I can think of.

Hate to bring this up, but I will....my strongest memory of the current Coeburn coach is his late hit cheap shot on Hall of PV in the endzone in '89 and his seeming celebration after seeing that Hall was injured. Am I remembering that wrong?

Yeah, Gotch, I think it was him, saw the tapes of it the next year. I was in Iraq at the time of the game though.

I thought so, a few years later a couple of the higher level wrestlers in my class were talking about trying to get him to start training with us and I can remember having serious concerns about attitude due to that. He never showed so it never became an issue.
